This area of learning encompasses the previously separate subjects of Science & Technology, Geography and History.

The purpose is to harness the innate curiosity and imagination of children, in order to broaden their understanding of the world around them and so enhance the skills of investigation, development of ideas and production of explanation.

Through study of this area children will be provided with opportunities to develop:

• Self-confidence and self esteem in expressing and sharing their thoughts and ideas and developing an appreciation of the beauty and wonder of the world.
• An awareness of themselves and their place in the world, as well as other places, cultures and the environment, so understanding the increasing interconnectedness between countries and continents.
• An awareness of Information and Communication Technology and its impact on society and the world around them.

are incorporated within topics and projects.

The World Around Us, throughout all stages, is planned to connect learning across the 3 areas of Science & Technology, History and Geography. Children are provided with the opportunities to develop their Literacy, Numeracy, ICT, Critical and Creative Thinking, Personal and Interpersonal Skills through a choice of topics. At all stages children are encouraged to become active learners, linking learning to current events at every opportunity.
