Numeracy

Numeracy plays an integral part of everyday life and is therefore an essential part of our daily teaching.  It is taught in accordance with the Northern Ireland Curriculum and Numeracy strategy but with the view to make it relevant to real life situations.  The children have opportunities to learn through practical work as well as written work, and mental maths activities form part of every lesson. Throughout their time in the Model Primary School. children are encouraged to engage in and learn through a wide variety of purposeful activities including:

  • Playing
  • Exploring & Investigating
  • Doing & Observing
  • Talking & Listening
  • Asking Questions
  • Reflecting
  • Drafting
  • Reading
  • Recording

Over the past number of years, children in P2, P4 and P6 have taken part in a very successful Paired Maths programme.  This aims to provide a fun and practical way of using and improving the children's mathematical skills and vocabulary as well as getting their parents and family involved.
